I was reading a post by gossipguy17 about how he belongs to the lost generation. While reading this I started to think about how my own generation differs from others, particularly the generation that lives and breathes the internet at the moment

My first computer purchase consisted of me walking down the aisles of PC World, until I reached what I considered the most up to date and expensive machine and buying it without really knowing what I was getting for my money. When I got it back to my flat, I realised that this remarkable machine ad a modem in it that would allow me to connect to a weird and wonderful place called the internet. It came with a program called Compuserve, and after registering I pressed the button and after a few weird noises coming from my machine, it was annouced to me that I was connected. And so started my life long love with the internet.

Those initial days were filled with traumas and failures. Dail-up connections were slow, yes you guessed it this was even before broadband. I also remember the most annoying for other people was that when I was in the internet the telephone line would say I was engaged to many people, including my mum, could never get hold of me. Although it did make it look like I was extremely popular and that people were calling me all the time. With the addition of another line, this problem was solved, but the dail up also brought another problem with it. The fixed monthly payment plan for broadband was not in place for dail-up and so BT very kindly used to charge you 1p per minute at off peek times. This would soon add up as one hour on the internet every day for a week would be £4.20. Multiply this over the month and you would get roughly £16.80. Ofcourse I was rarely on for just an hour, especially at weekends, I my phone bill was becoming larger and larger by the minute....and I don't mean literally.

It seemed a life time went by before we had a fixed monthly payment scheme and the opportunity of having broadband, certainly increased my internet viewing time. Playing online games such as Meridian Online, Everquest and Dark Age of Camelot took up most of my time, but there became a time that I started to move my interest away from these games and more onto the social network aspect of the internet. Although I still play World of Warcraft, I find less and less time for these games, but still enjoy them. I was never one of those people who had a MySpace account. I first got involved in Compuserves' Worlds Away online community then moved onto facebook. I was using Twitter when it first appeared, after discovering and listening the podcasts such as net@nite. As blogs became popular, I created more and more. Wordpress, blogger and even Pounce (which I don't think exists any more) all helped me to record my life online. With this can the need to change and style the blogs and the pages I had and it was soon that I made the enquiries to create my own domain after my wordpress themes became boring and couldn't perform the changes that I required. With this, came the need to learn some HTML and CSS and I enjoyed the self teaching part of this and the podcasts that came with this venture, typically Boagworld and CSS-Tricks.

Now I live in a world that runs almost parallel with my real life one. A world that almost charts my every more and emotion and reports it to all to see. Although many people assume that these two worlds are identical, they are not, since we only let people see the world that we want to on the internet. My world there is neither popular or interesting and I have never assumed that I am recording it for the world to see and view and comment on, but more importantly as a record of my life and what I am doing and thinking. I enjoy it, and I seriously mean that, its a nice feeling coming up with ideas about things to post and to link and if anyone wants to look then thats great, and if they don't then thats great, because in the end I am enjoying myself.

So I don't look back with anger that I didn't have the technology that people today have. I look back more to say I was there as it was created, and without it, I wonder how many of the 'lost generation' would not have some friends that they have today that they have found on the internet. If anything I am looking forward, because with advancements in technology coming thick and fast, I seriously cannot wait until the next spring forward.

New Year's Resolution Part 2!

Well, I know its been a while since part 1, but here is the long awaited part two of the New Year's Resolution saga. How many parts are there? well at the moment I would say about four, but that might chance as the series progresses

So my second NYR is to try and achieve a more active web presence. What does that mean? Well this hopefully is a start to this resolution. I would like to be more active on the web, post more often on my blogs, comment more often, and basically try to get better known or read on the net. This might initially seem a simple target, but it really does take more than a regular post here and there. I am very much aware that the content has to be relevant and interesting and my comments in response to other people's blogs have to be suitable and interesting as well.

As well as all this, its important to keep the posting and commenting going, so that people become familiar with my presence and personality. This will hopefully, in turn, build up a following beyond that of my dedicated bezzy and my brother.

So what am I going to try and use to increase my web presence? Well, initially, I am going to try and tweet more often. Although this is hard when I am at work, I am trying to make up for it at weekends and on the evenings. I am also trying to reply to more people. The other most important feature of my twitter account is this is were everything links to, so following me there, means you get a tweet about everything I post.

I do at the moment have a YouTube account, but I find this very difficult to keep going, so I have attempted to make shorter videos using my 12 seconds channel. These range from signing videos, to popping bubble wrap. Anything that takes my fancy at the time.

Over the years I have started up and developed many different blogging platforms. Initially in blogger, then moving to wordpress and then eventually downloading the wordpress package onto my own domain. I tend to use MarsEdit to write my blog posts, especially since I can save them and finish them later if needed. This I used to then copy into each of the blogging platforms so that several blogs ended up with the same update, incase someone followed me on one platform and not another. Recently I discovered Posterous a simple blogging platform that accepts email as a method of posting, but most importantly autoposts to all the blogging platforms I use. One email and the blog gets posted to all. I then link my own domain blog to twitter so hopefully most people look at that site, since it is the one I designed and try to improve. So please try and add your comments there. Posterous also allows me to post quick links and photos straight to my blogs and Flickr so I have the photos saved

The last Earth Day I was introduced to Daily Booth. This is a site where you take a daily photo and this is kept to create a visual blog of your time on the web. It also allows you to comment on other people's photos and post your responses in text, photo or both forms. At the moment, I am up to over 200 photos, and although I sometimes double booth, (post two photos in one day) most days have a photo. This photo can be seen on my blogs, but also I am trying to comment regularly on other people's photos as they present questions to be answered.

This is hopefully the basis of my new active web presence, so wish me luck in maintaining it!. Have fun!

Over the passed few days I have been discussing and reading a lot about the recent snowy weather and what has caused it and why we should no longer believe what the weather forecasters tell us. Its been a chilly few weeks and there are lots of theories going around that can be used to explain the cold period. I am sure that if we went back in time, before our knowledge and understanding of science had materialised, we would be blaming the snow on displeasing the gods and would be accepting our punishment with humble hearts. In the present day,we might associate the weather to the climate change that is causing shifts in the climatic bands of the world. The warmer weather going further south and us in the UK having to put up with the cold northern weather from the arctic cascading down onto us. Ofcourse some of us, relate this snowy weather to the a return of the ice age, which will eventually cover most o the northern hemisphere and cover us with glacial amounts of snow and ice and freeze us forever. I myself, like to associate the recent cold spell to two factors. The first, quite simple put, its winter, and in winter we get cold snowy weather. Although this is not that different from summer, when we get warm wet weather, there does exist a slight difference. The second factor I associate with this weather, is quite simply that the White Witch of Narnia has gotten the upper hand for a while. But do not fear! the sons and daughters of Eve are on their way and if you listen very carefully you can almost here Aslan's roar. Long live Aslan!

Snowy Weather

As many of you already know, we seem to be gripped by some very cold snowy weather at the moment. I can safely say its been a while since I have seen this much snow that has stayed around for so long. It is seriously getting to the stage that I can't really remember what the locality looks like without the blanket of white snow. Ofcourse, in typical UK style, the grit is running out, the fuel for the power stations is running out and people have already started to panic buy food, in case the cold snap lasts until July!

The local council are obviously doing their best with the limited resources they have, since it is never likely that we will have snow in the UK (pauses for a sarcastic smile). The local shopping centre managed to clear the snow off the car parks which was a great help, although after piling the snow up into huge piles, I am sure that if the cold snap doesn't actually last to July then these snow mountains definitely will!

Talking about clearing the car parks, two of my neighbours, valiantly set out clearing the parking space outside the flats tonight. It was getting to the point that cars couldn't get out of the gentle incline due to the thickness of snow and ice. After asking the local housing trust to help, it was obvious that it was going to be down to us to clear the car park. I must say they did a very good job, and I am more hopeful that I will be able to get my car out tomorrow morning to go shopping and hopefully for the rest of the weekend and next week, so that I won't have to suffer going on the buses (because it will take two buses) to work. Seeing their community spirit clearing the car park, I plucked up the courage to ask them if I could borrow their spade, (not possessing one myself) and, once they had finished their clearing, I set about clearing the paths from our doors to the car park. I must admit it was hard work and I built up quite a sweat, but in the end I was pleased with the finished result.

I thought it would be nice to start and add my new year's resolutions to my blog and see who things go

Also I thought I would like to have a go at writing this post in MarsEdit and then copying it into the web interface of Posterous to see how it copes since I sometimes get bored with the plain feeling of the posts there

Anyway...here we go...

Resolution number 1

To keep my flat tidy!

In order to achieve this I am going to try and put things away straight away. I tend to be very good at multi tasking, but in doing this I tend to flit and never really finish anything. So I am hoping to start putting things away and aim to keep everything nice and clean. You never know someone might just turn up one day to visit!

I love the films on here. Worth a look for any cat lover! Although my cat is no longer with me, the TV dinner and getting up in the morning brings back so many fond memories, they are very true to life for any cat owner

Through the recommendation of a bass player me and eight women ventured into York on Friday night to watch a production of the Full Monty.
Not really knowing what to expect from the musical ( I have seen the film so I knew the rough plotline) I was quite surprised to find that it had been set in America. An interesting change to the original film. This didn't seem to affect the story line although the accents did seem to disappear some what when the songs started.
The songs were mostly enjoyable with two very good singers the 'fat bastard' had a great voice and his wife also. The character of the women with accompanied them on the piano was fantastic. So similar to Julie Walters that it made me laugh so much.
Although,after some of my friends had over heard a conversation in the toilets that they had come thinking the show was just a continuous strip show, the show qanat the best musical around I don't think it ever set out to be. It is a show that has music acting and stripping in it and that's how it has to be viewed. The climax was funny, clever and great. The atmosphere was fantastic throughout.
If you have the opportunity to go and see it do so. But don't go if you are offended by bad language or nudity.
